Inspirational Quotes by Benito Mussolini (Italian Head of State)

Benito Amilcaro Andrea Mussolini (1883–1945) was an Italian Fascist political leader. Known as Il Duce (“The Leader,”) he founded the Italian Fascist Party in 1919.

Born in Predappio, Italy, Mussolini was a successful journalist and former socialist before he founded the Facsci di Combattimento, the Italian fascist movement. His movement was a model for Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Party.

As Italy’s prime minister 1922–43, Mussolini progressively dismantled the institutions of democratic government. He installed firm state control, organized a cult of personality, and made himself dictator. He started reinstating Italy as a great European power.

Mussolini led Italy into three consecutive wars, the last of which capsized his administration. Forced to resign after the Allied invasion of Sicily, he was rescued from incarceration by the Nazis but was arrested and executed by Italian communist partisans.

Before 1935, Mussolini was viewed as the person who had saved his country from communism and revitalized its fortunes. After he allied Italy with Nazi Germany and Japan in World War II, his reputation changed from that of a redeemer to that of an incompetent and brutal dictator. After Hitler restored him as a puppet leader in northern Italy in 1943, Mussolini drove Italy deeper into the tragedy of invasion, occupation, and civil war.
