Inspirational Quotes by Arthur Compton (American Physicist)

Arthur Holly Compton (1892–1962) was an American physicist who developed the Compton Effect, for which he won the 1927 Nobel Prize in Physics. He also played a significant role in the development of the atomic bomb.

Born in Wooster, Ohio, Compton studied at Princeton and Cambridge and held academic positions at Washington University in St Louis and Chicago University. Based on Albert Einstein’s proposal that light involves photons, Compton discovered that wavelengths of X-rays increase when the rays collide with electrons. Called the “Compton effect,” this discovery helped establish that X-rays could function as particles.

Leader of the initial phase of the Manhattan Project that aimed to develop the atomic bomb, Compton worked with Enrico Fermi to create the first sustained nuclear chain reactor. This creation heralded the means for the controlled release of nuclear energy.
