Ben Elton (b.1959,) fully Benjamin Charles Elton, is a British comedian, playwright, writer, librettist, actor, and director. He is recognized as the scriptwriter for the television sitcoms The Young Ones and Blackadder and as a stand-up comedian and actor.

Born in Catford, South London, Elton made his first professional appearance as a stand-up comedian at the Comic Strip Club in 1981. At the vanguard of the alternative comedy movement, he co-wrote such popular television comedies as the anarchic The Young Ones (1982, 1984,) Happy Families (1985,) Blackadder II (1986,) Blackadder the Third (1987,) Blackadder Goes Forth (1989) and The Thin Blue Line (1995–96.)

A frequent fixture on the cabaret circuit and television, Elton has also written stage plays, bestselling novels, a musical, and a film. His television shows include Ben Elton—The Man from Auntie (1990; 1994.) From 2000, he began working on stage musicals. He created The Beautiful Game (2000) and the sequel Love Never Dies (2010) with English composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and We Will Rock You (2003) with the rock band Queen.

Elton has also written five plays, including, most recently, The Upstart Crow, which opened in February 2020.
