Caroline Bouvier Kennedy (b.1957) is an American author and attorney who served as the U.S. Ambassador to Japan 2013–17. A prominent member of the Kennedy family, she is the only surviving child of President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy (later Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.) Caroline is a niece of the senators Robert F. Kennedy and Ted Kennedy.

Born in New York City, Caroline Kennedy was almost six when her father was assassinated. Caroline studied at Radcliffe College and Columbia Law School and worked in law and politics with a focus on education reform and charitable work. She also served as a spokeswoman for her family’s legacy and authored two books with Ellen Aldermanon on civil liberties: In Our Defense: The Bill of Rights in Action (1992) and The Right to Privacy (1997.) Caroline’s works also include A Patriot’s Handbook (2003) and She Walks in Beauty: A Woman’s Journey Through Poems (2016.)

Caroline’s brother John F. Kennedy Jr. (and his wife and sister-in-law) died in 1999 when the single-engine plane he was piloting crashed into the Atlantic Ocean en route to a cousin’s wedding in Martha’s Vineyard.
