Inspirational Quotes by Emily Kimbrough (American Author, Journalist)

Emily Kimbrough (1899–1989) was an American author, journalist, editor, lecturer, and radio broadcaster. She is best known for her humorous and charming books.

Born in Muncie, Indiana, Kimbrough attended Bryn Mawr College, Pennsylvania. For many years in the ’20s and ’30s, Kimbrough was the editor of the Ladies’ Home Journal.

With her friend Cornelia Otis Skinner (later an actress and playwright,) Kimbrough booked a voyage for Europe on an ocean liner in their early twenties. They began a series of humorous misadventures–such as being shipwrecked on the St. Lawrence River before they even reached the ocean. They wrote a travel memoir about the trip, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay (1942.) It was made into a popular movie in 1944, starring Diana Lynn and Gail Russell.

Kimbrough wrote two more memoirs, We Followed Our Hearts to Hollywood (1943) and How Dear to My Heart (1944,) reminiscing her childhood in turn-of-the-century Muncie.

Kimbrough’s other works include Through Charley’s Door (1952,) Forty Plus and Fancy-Free (1954,) Water, Water, Everywhere (1956,) and Pleasure by the Busload (1961.) She also contributed articles to numerous publications, including Country Life, House & Garden, Travel, Reader’s Digest, Saturday Review of Literature, Parents, The New Yorker, and The Atlantic Monthly.
