Dame Julie Andrews (b.1935,) originally Julia Elizabeth Wells, is an English motion picture, stage, and musical superstar renowned for her crystalline four-octave voice and her charm and skill as an actress. She is one of the most beloved musical talents of both the stage and the screen.
Born in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, into a showbiz family, Andrews had a clarion voice with a remarkable range that made her a star of the London concert stage at age 12. As an adult, her lush voice made her one of the musical theater’s most sought-after leading women.
Andrews’s celebrity was established with her first appearance on screen as the magical title character in Walt Disney’s Mary Poppins (1964; Academy Award for Best Actress,) one of the top-grossing films of all time. A year later, her performance as Maria von Trapp in The Sound of Music (1965) broadened her popular “sweetness and light” persona, and the movie was an extraordinary financial success. She also starred in several other notable films, including Darling Lili (1970,) Victor/Victoria (1982,) and The Princess Diaries (2001.)
In 1997, a routine throat surgery on vocal nodules damaged Andrews’s singing voice, but she has kept active with non-singing roles in film and television, and with writing children’s books. An autobiography, Home: A Memoir of My Early Years, was published in 2008.
