Inspirational Quotes by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (American Basketball Player)

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (b.1947,) previously Ferdinand Lewis “Lew” Alcindor, Jr., is an American basketball player, author, and actor. This Hall of Fame sportsman is one of the most dominant centers in the history of the game at the high school, college, and professional ranks.

Born in Harlem, New York City, Abdul-Jabbar is seven-foot-one-inch tall; he remains one of the tallest men ever to play professional basketball. He won three collegiate championships with the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) Bruins and six professional championships with the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Lakers.

No professional basketball player has won as many awards and played in as many All-Star games as Abdul-Jabbar has—the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament Most Outstanding Player three times, National Basketball Association (NBA) Rookie of the Year once, NBA Most Valuable Player six times, NBA All-Star Team 19 times, and NBA Playoff Most Valuable Player twice.

Despite his vast fan base, Abdul-Jabbar attracted condemnation for his 1969 conversion to Islam, name change, a divorce from his first wife, and his outspokenness about racial inequalities. He even declined to represent the United States at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City in protest to the unequal treatment of African-Americans.

Abdul-Jabbar authored three autobiographies: Giant Steps (1983,) Becoming Kareem (1991,) and A Season on the Reservation (2000,) along with a chronicle of the lives of famous African-Americans, Profiles in Black Courage (1996.)
