Inspirational Quotes by Lew Wasserman (American Entertainment Executive)

Lew Wasserman (1913–2002,) fully Lewis Robert Wasserman, was an American talent agent. He was an executive of the Music Corporation of American (MCA) talent agency.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, to Russian immigrant parents, Wasserman worked as an usher at a vaudeville theater during high school. He started his six-decade long-career in the entertainment industry as national director of advertising and publicity with MCA in 1936. When made vice president of MCA’s motion picture division, Wasserman signed up such A-list celebrities as Billy Wilder, Bette Davis, Jimmy Stewart, Gene Kelly, and Ronald Reagan.

By 1946, Wasserman had risen to president of MCA—in that role, he started the MCA motion picture division and acquired Universal Studios and Decca Records. In 1973, he was named the chairman of MCA. Soon, he initiated the concept of the “summer blockbuster” with such hit films as Steven Spielberg’s Jaws (1975) and George Lucas’s Star Wars (1977.) In the late 1970s and 1980s, MCA extended its television involvement by producing such programs as The Rockford Files, Columbo, Kojak, and Miami Vice.

Wasserman has been the subject of many books, including When Hollywood Had a King by Connie Bruck (2003,) as well as a documentary, The Last Mogul (2005.)
