Inspirational Quotes by Marshall Rosenberg (American Psychologist)

Marshall Bertram Rosenberg (1934–2015) was an American psychologist, mediator, author, and teacher. He developed Nonviolent Communication, a formal conflict-resolution process.

Born in Canton, Ohio, Rosenberg grew up in Detroit. He studied at the University of Michigan and received a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Wisconsin in 1961, where he met his friend and mentor, psychologist Carl Rogers.

In the 1960s, Rosenberg developed Nonviolent Communication (NVC.) This process facilitates better interpersonal communication and cultivates mutual recognition of deeper emotional needs, resulting in greater compassion and peaceful resolution between conflicted parties.

Marshall worked closely with civil rights activists, mediated between rioting students and college administrators, and worked to desegregate public schools in long-segregated regions. He was also a peacemaker and mediator.

Rosenberg’s notable works are We Can Work It Out: Resolving Conflicts Peacefully (2004,) Raising Children Compassionately (2004,) The Surprising Purpose of Anger: Beyond Anger Management (2005,) Living Nonviolent Communication (2012,) and Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life (2015.)
