Inspirational Quotes by Matthieu Ricard (French Buddhist Monk)

Matthieu Ricard (b.1946) is a French molecular biologist-turned Buddhist monk. He is also a prominent author, translator, and photographer, and serves as an interpreter for the Dalai Lama.

Born in Paris, Ricard was the son of the prominent French philosopher Jean-Francois Revel. His initial interest in Tibetan Buddhist religion and philosophy led him to travel to India in 1967. After completing his doctoral dissertation at the Institut Pasteur in Paris in 1972, Richard abandoned his promising career in genetics and molecular biology to become a monk. Between 1967 and 1991, he studied under the lama Dilgo Khyentse and has since published many biographies and spiritual writings of the Rinpoche.

Ricard serves as an intellectual bridge in the scientific understanding of how ancient Buddhist contemplative practices benefit the human body and mind.

Ricard is the author of such best-selling books as Happiness: A Guide to Developing Life’s Most Important Skill (2007) and Altruism: The Power of Compassion to Change Yourself and the World (2016.) Ricard lives in a monastery in Nepal and runs a humanitarian organization, to which he channels all proceeds of his books and lectures.

Certainly we should know that there is no moral justification for inflicting needless pain and death on any being.
