Ralph Lauren (b.1939,) born Ralph Lipschitz, is an American fashion designer, celebrated for his characteristically preppy “American” look. He is one of the most influential present-day designers; in addition to men’s and women’s wear, he produces his own line of fragrances and home furnishings. He founded Ralph Lauren Corporation in 1967 and has been CEO and chairman since its initial public offering in 1997.
Born in New York City, Lauren attended many business studies courses. He worked as a sales representative for the tie-manufacturing firm of A. Rivetz & Co, where he also got experience with designing fashionable ties.
In 1968, Lauren set up his business, Polo Fashions. He placed a substantial prominence on packaging and presentation and developed a range of “lifestyle” fashion shirts and suits that appealed to professional men.
Over the next five decades, Lauren developed an extensive portfolio of premier fashion designer products using the Ralph Lauren, Polo, Lauren, and other labels.
