Inspirational Quotes by Raymond Carver (American Author)

Raymond Carver (1939–88,) in full Raymond Clevie Carver, was an American short-story writer and poet. His realistic reporting about the working poor reflected his own life.

Born in Clatskanie, Oregon, Carver married right out of high school and grappled for many years to provide for his young family and attempt a career as a writer. He also fought chronic alcoholism.

Carver published several small-press books of poetry and one chapbook of fiction in the 1960s and early 1970s. He became recognized with his collection Will You Please Be Quiet, Please? (1976,) which was included in the Best American Short Stories anthology. His work then began to reach a wider audience.

Carver’s fiction and poetry are exceptional for their lean narratives. His works focus on the lower and middle classes, and they deal with states of passage: couples breaking up, people between jobs, etc. He was a Guggenheim Fellow in 1979 and was twice conferred grants by the National Endowment for Arts. He taught at the University of Iowa, the University of Texas, and the University of California.

Carver’s subsequent collections, Cathedral (1984,) Fire: Essays, Poems, Stories (1984,) Elephant and Other Stories (1988,) and Where I’m Calling From (1988,) made him famous. He also published several collections of poetry, including Near Klamath (1968,) Where Water Comes Together With Other Water (1985,) and Ultramarine (1985.)
