Inspirational Quotes by Richard N. Goodwin (American Writer)

Richard Naradof Goodwin (1931–2018) was an American writer, journalist, and presidential advisor. He was an aide and speechwriter to Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, and Senator Robert F. Kennedy.

Born in Boston, Goodwin attended Tufts University and Harvard Law School. He was a clerk for Supreme Court Associate Justice Felix Frankfurter for a year before joining a House subcommittee’s staff investigating rigged television quiz shows. His work awed Robert Kennedy, and he was assigned to Senator John F. Kennedy’s team. He and Theodore C. Sorensen penned most of Kennedy’s presidential campaign speeches.

Goodwin wrote many of the great campaign and Oval Office speeches of the period and helped draft the milestone Voting Rights Act of 1965 banning literacy tests and other biased practices that had long disenfranchised black Americans.

Goodwin taught at Wesleyan University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. he wrote for Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, The New York Times, and other publications.

Goodwin wrote many books and articles on public policy, including The Sower’s Seed: A Tribute to Adlai Stevenson (1965,) Triumph or Tragedy: Reflections on Vietnam (1966,) The American Condition (1974,) and Promises to Keep: A Call for a New American Revolution (1992.)

Goodwin’s memories are Remembering America: A Voice from the Sixties (1988.) His second wife, the historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, is noted for her highly regarded presidential studies.
