Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–93) was the 19th president of the United States from 1877–81, having served in the United States House of Representatives March 1865–67 and as governor of Ohio 1876–77. Hayes, a lawyer and staunch abolitionist, defended refugee slaves in court proceedings in the antebellum years.
