Inspirational Quotes by Shirley Hufstedler (American Lawyer, Jurist)

Shirley Hufstedler (1925–2016,) née Shirley Ann Mount, was an American lawyer and judge. She served as the first United States Secretary of Education 1979–81 under President Jimmy Carter.

Born in Denver, Colorado, Hufstedler got a BBA from the University of New Mexico and an LLB from Stanford Law School and went into private practice. During her judicial career, she served as a judge of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, California Court of Appeal, and the U.S. Court of Appeals.

When President Carter created the education department from the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, Hufstedler became his Secretary of Education. After Carter’s term ended, Hufstedler returned to her legal career and served on various boards and committees.
