Inspirational Quotes by Vladimir K. Zworykin (American Physicist)

Vladimir K. Zworykin (1889–1982,) fully Vladimir Kosma Zworykin, was a Russian-born American electronic engineer who invented the iconoscope and kinescope television systems, precursors of the television camera. He was also the first to scan the image electronically.

Born in Murom, Vladimir Oblast, Russia, Zworykin graduated in electrical engineering from Petrograd Institute of Technology (1912) and studied under the French physicist Paul Langevin in Paris.

Following the Russian Revolution (1919,) Zworykin immigrated to America, studied at the University of Pittsburgh, and from 1929 pursued a career with the Radio Corporation of America (RCA,) rising to director of electronic research (1946) and vice-president and technical consultant.

Zworykin is chiefly remembered for applying the cathode ray tube to television, a development that he patented in 1928. Although others had already proposed electronic scanning based on Ferdinand Braun’s cathode-ray tube, Zworykin’s technology had not been available to make it a reality.

By 1938, Zworykin had developed the first practical television camera, which he called the ‘iconoscope.’ He made other significant contributions to electronic optics with his scientific team at RCA, including the electron microscope (1939) and multipliers in scintillation counters for measuring radioactivity.

Zworykin’s co-wrote Photocells and Their Application (1934,) Television: The Electronics of Image Transmission (1940,) Electron Optics and the Electron Microscope (1945,) Photoelectricity and Its Application (1949,) and Television in Science and Industry (1958.)
