Walter Phillips (1925–2008) was an American radio personality. One of the most prominent local radio broadcasters in America, best known for hosting WGN’s morning radio show from Chicago 1965–86.
Born in Portsmouth, Ohio, Phillips served with the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. He attended drama school and became a disc jockey in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Phillips pioneered the radio call-in talk show format at WLW in Cincinnati. He created his trademark style of remixing prerecorded interviews as a comedy piece. He then moved to Chicago to become a host of the WGN morning show.
Phillips was one of the original radio hosts to use witty and offbeat phone calls. He skillfully blended information with humor. Phillips attracted nearly 1.5 million listeners and a 50% market share at the height of his popularity.
