Warren Beatty (b.1937,) originally Henry Warren Beaty, is an American film actor, director, and producer. One of the wealthiest and most respected men in Hollywood, he has also produced, directed, and written screenplays. He is best known for his politically charged depictions of somewhat outcast but charming heroes.
Born in Richmond, Virginia, Beatty is the brother of actress Shirley MacLaine. He studied at the Stella Adler Acting School and was first seen in the television series The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis (1955–59) before making his Broadway début in A Loss of Roses (1959) and his film début in Splendor in the Grass (1961.)
Beatty appeared as a brooding, handsome leading man in several comedies in addition to portraying more complex combinations of innocence and sarcasm in films like Lilith (1964) and Mickey One (1965.) He produced Bonnie and Clyde (1967,) wrote and produced Shampoo (1975,) co-directed Heaven Can Wait (1978,) and was producer, co-writer, and Academy Award-winning director of Reds (1981.) He headed the cast in them all.
Beatty is the only individual to have been nominated for an Academy Award in four categories—director, actor, producer, and writer—on two occasions (Heaven Can Wait and Reds.) Later films include Dick Tracy (1990) and Bugsy (1991.)
