Inspirational Quotes by Athenaeus (Greek Grammarian, Author)

Athenaeus of Naucratis (fl. 2nd century CE) was a Greek grammarian and author. Born in Naucratis, Egypt, he lived first in Alexandria and later in Rome.

Athenaeus wrote the Deipnosophistae (‘Banquet of the Learned,’) a compendium of anecdotes and excerpts from the works of ancient learned men (including lyric poets, comic dramatists, and Hellenistic historians,) some bearing the names of real persons, such as Galen of Pergamon, arranged as scholarly dinner-table conversation about philosophical, literary, and allied topics. Thirteen of its 15 books survive relatively complete, along with a summary of the other two.

Athenaeus cites some 1,250 authors, gives the titles of more than 1,000 plays, and quotes more than 10,000 lines of verse. Along with the quotations from many lost works of antiquity, Deipnosophistae provides a variety of remarkable information on all aspects of life in the ancient Greco-Roman world.
