Dolly Rebecca Parton (b.1946) is an American country music singer, songwriter, actress, businesswoman, and children’s author. This winner of seven Grammy Awards, three American Music Awards, and ten Country Music Association Awards is best known for establishing the interface between country and pop music styles over a career spanning half a century.

Born into poverty in Locust Ridge, Sevier County, Tennessee, Parton used her talent and willpower to become one of the best-known women in country- and pop-music. She also made several movies, including Nine to Five (1980) and Steel Magnolias (1989,) and she established Dollywood, a theme park in Tennessee. Her entrepreneurial intuition has made the subsequent expansion ventures into a business empire spanning everything from theme parks and hotels to media production and intellectual property.

As a philanthropist, Parton founded the Imagination Library, which sends a free book every month to every kid under the age of five. She has donated money to hospitals and provided schools with much-needed technology.
