Inspirational Quotes by Gilbert Adair (Scottish Film Critic, Novelist)

Gilbert Adair (1944–2011) was a Scottish novelist, poet, film critic, and journalist.

Born in Edinburgh, Adair left Britain for Paris in his early twenties and indulged his love of cinema at the Cinémathèque Française. He became famous for the postmodern novel A Void (1994,) a “fiendish translation” of French novelist Georges Perec’s La Disparition (1969.) Adair did not use the letter e in the translation.

Adair’s early works of fiction included Alice Through the Needle’s Eye (1984; following Alice’s Adventures in Wonderlan and Through the Looking-Glass) and Peter Pan and the Only Children (1987; following Peter and Wendy.)

Adair won the respect of filmmakers with volumes such as A Night at the Pictures (1985,) Myths & Memories (1986,) Hollywood’s Vietnam (1981,) Flickers (1995,) and Surfing the Zeitgeist (1997.) His The Holy Innocents (1988) won the Author’s Club First Novel Award.

Adair was a columnist for The Sunday Times 1992–96 and the chief film critic of The Independent 1998–99 and a columnist for The Independent in 1999. Later in life, he became known for films such as Love and Death on Long Island (1997) and The Dreamers (2003) adapted from his novels.
