Anthony Hopkins (b.1937,) fully Sir Philip Anthony Hopkins, is a Welsh-born American film and stage actor. He is celebrated for playing pitiable misfits or characters on the fringes of madness.

Born in Port Talbot, Hopkins graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA,) made his stage début in The Quare Fellow (1960) at Manchester. A period in the regional repertory was followed by his London début in Julius Caesar (1964.) Later stage appearances include Equus (1974) and three triumphant National Theatre performances, in Pravda (1985,) King Lear (1986,) and Antony and Cleopatra (1987.)

Hopkins’s film appearances include The Lion in Winter (1968,) The Elephant Man (1980,) and The Bounty (1984.) Television work includes War and Peace (1972,) The Lindbergh Kidnapping Case (1976, Emmy,) The Bunker (1981, Emmy,) and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1982.)

Hopkins won a Best Actor Academy Award as the cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs (1991) and received further nominations for The Remains of the Day (1993,) Nixon (1995,) and Amistad (1997.) Other films include Howards End (1992,) Shadowlands (1993,) and The Mask of Zorro (1998,) plus the Silence of the Lambs sequel Hannibal (2001) and prequel Red Dragon (2002.)
