Kate Elizabeth Winslet (b.1975) is an award-winning English actress, famous for taking on challenging projects, immersing herself in the eclectic roles she plays, and for her portrayals of spirited and unusual women.
Born in Berkshire, England, Winslet was raised in a family of actors. She began performing at an early age, taking small parts in commercials, television shows, and stage plays. Her on-screen persona as a typical “English girl” was cemented in the films Sense and Sensibility (1995) and Jude (1996.)
Winslet became an international superstar when she played opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in director James Cameron’s record-breaking Titanic (1997.) After Titanic, she avoided high profile and lucrative projects and acted in several independent films suggesting her interest in acting than in stardom. Her career has been a curious mixture of idiosyncratic serious movies and popular acclaim.
