Phil Collins (b.1951,) fully Philip David Charles Collins, is an English singer, drummer, and songwriter. His many hits include “You Can’t Hurry Love” (1982) and “Sussudio” (1985.)
Born in Hounslow, West London, the son of a theatrical agent, Collins appeared on stage in Oliver! (1964,) but decided to take up a career in rock music. He began with the band Flaming Youth, joined Genesis as drummer in 1970, and later became their lead vocalist. He led the British progressive rock to international pop success until his departure in 1996. By that time, Genesis became one of only three artists in history to sell over 100 million records. His concurrent solo career had come to outshine the band’s, with albums like Face Value (1981) and But Seriously … (1989.)
Early hearing loss triggered Collins to announce a 2003–06 farewell world tour. After a decade away from the stage, he returned for a run of shows in 2017.
Wait for it, wait for it! Anticipation is half the fun. So I’ve been told.
